Vrijheidsmaaltijd (Freedom Meal): Vrijheid en de Koloniën

— English below —

– Tanja Jadnanansing (Tweede Kamerlid PvdA),
– Joan de Windt (auteur Weg met Mental Slavery),
– Miguel Heilbron, Mitchell Esajas en Jessica de Abreu (New Urban Collective / Heilbron Collectie),
– Maarten van Hinten en Marjorie Boston (Rightaboutnow),
– Melissa Marijnen (Professional Rebel),
– Chiara De Cesari en Nancy Jouwe (UvA, department European Studies)
– Glenn Helberg en Roy Pieters, i.s.m.

ENGLISH

While on May 5, 1945 we were freed from our occupier, we ourselves were still the occupier of many other parts of the world. Come eat with us at the Freedom Meal and converse with us on Europe’s hidden colonial history of occupation, liberation and migration. Together, we try to find an answer to the question: what freedom are we really celebrating?

New Europeans invites you to this program on May 5 filled with speakers, art, music and of course good food. Here, you find information about the program and reservations.

Program
– Part of the central program is in Dutch. For English speakers, we make sure to assign you to a table with other English speakers. –
The meal is opened by professor Gloria Wekker, social and cultural anthropologist (MA: UVA 1981, PHD: UCLA 1992), specializing in Gender Studies, Sexuality Studies, African American Studies and Caribbean. Poet Jerry Afriyie will recite some of his newest poetry.

Each table has a special guest that hosts the conversation via personal stories about cultural heritage, diversity and history. Among them are:
– Tanja Jadnanansing (Member of Parliament, PvdA),
– Joan de Windt (autor Weg met Mental Slavery),
– Miguel Heilbron, Mitchell Esajas and Jessica de Abreu (New Urban Collective / Heilbron Collectie),
– Maarten van Hinten and Marjorie Boston (Rightaboutnow),
– Melissa Marijnen (Professional Rebel),
– Chiara De Cesari and Nancy Jouwe (UvA, department European Studies)
– Glenn Helberg and Roy Pieters, i.c.w. Joeri Oltheten and Yvette Cijntje (Ocan).

On the surrounding terrain ‘The Wall’ (wall of the former marinebase, right in front of the current meeting place of the EU top) you find a small exposition including a readingtable by postcolonial library Heilbron Collectie and different archive material.
As for the food, we let ourselves be inspired by one of the most beloved colonial kitchens in The Netherlands: the Suriname kitchen.
